Problem 43
Q

The iodine isotope 53131I{^{131}_{53}\textrm{I}} is used in hospitals for diagnosis of thyroid function. If 782  μg782 \; \mu\textrm{g} are ingested by a patient, determine the activity

  1. immediately,
  2. 1.50 h later when the thyroid is being tested, and
  3. 3.0 months later.
Use Appendix B.
A
  1. 3.60×1012 Bq3.60 \times 10^{12} \textrm{ Bq}
  2. 3.58×1012 Bq3.58 \times 10^{12} \textrm{ Bq}
  3. 1.33×109 Bq1.33 \times 10^9 \textrm{ Bq}

Where did the 130.906 grams/mole come from? In a different problem (#48), you use the conversion 32 grams/mole...

Never mind. I remembered it is due to the molecular weight of the isotopes... Apologies.
